Algeria announced on Thursday that it was cutting diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates following years of tension, accusing Abu Dhabi of interfering in national and regional affairs.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that in an official statement, Algiers accused the Gulf country of provocative and hostile acts, although it remained unclear exactly what triggered the rupture.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has repeatedly described the UAE as a “micro-state” seeking to destabilise several countries in the region, referencing Libya, Mali and Sudan. The North African country, which had signalled a diplomatic break for months, said the decision followed the exhaustion of all avenues to preserve bilateral relations.
In response, the Emirati foreign ministry expressed hope that the decision would be temporary, stating its desire to maintain fraternal ties with Algeria.
According to the Algerian foreign ministry, Abu Dhabi had been warned several times but persisted in conduct that eventually became unacceptable and intolerable. The ministry said Algeria had spared no effort to alert the Emirati side to the potential consequences of its actions.
In a televised interview in July, Tebboune had lashed out at Abu Dhabi, alleging that instability follows wherever the UAE is involved and insisting that Algeria wanted the Gulf nation to stay away. He noted then that a diplomatic break would have occurred much earlier had Algeria not sought to avoid deepening divisions within the Arab world.
