US President Donald Trump landed in Ireland on Saturday under tight security for two days combining diplomacy with golf, in a trip that again blurs the lines between his presidency and personal business interests.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Trump touched down at Dublin Airport shortly before 8:25am aboard his Qatari-gifted plane, with at least 4,000 police and security personnel, including snipers, mobilised for what has been described as one of the biggest security operations ever mounted in Ireland.
Thousands of anti-Trump protesters are expected to rally in Dublin, where the President will hold separate meetings with Ireland’s Taoiseach, Micheal Martin, and President Catherine Connolly, before proceeding to his Doonbeg resort in County Clare to attend the Irish Open, where he may present the trophy on Sunday.
Analysts noted that the visit highlights Trump’s continued promotion of his family’s golf business while in office, following similar visits to his Scottish resorts last year involving UK and EU leaders.
Discussions with Irish leaders are expected to cover the Middle East, US tariffs on EU pharmaceuticals and immigration, with Ireland’s stance on Gaza and West Bank settlement trade bans posing a possible point of tension, particularly with President Connolly, a known Trump critic.
Some 40,000 fans are expected at the tournament, headlined by world number two Rory McIlroy.
