King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom passed away on Thursday night, ending a 31-year reign that began when he was just three years old.
The Tooro Kingdom announced the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the world’s youngest reigning monarch, who passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 34Â .
The Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, confirmed the monarch’s death in a late-night statement, describing it as an “immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda” .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the kingdom did not disclose the cause of death, though local media reported the king had been critically ill and was receiving treatment in the United States . Reports also suggested he had been battling cancer .
Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo ascended the throne on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III . He was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch . Due to his young age, a regency council comprising his mother, Queen Best Kemigisa, and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni governed the kingdom’s affairs until he turned 18 .
King Oyo ruled over more than two million people as the 13th monarch of Tooro, a kingdom founded in the early 19th century . Despite his cultural authority, traditional kingdoms in Uganda hold no constitutional political power . During his reign, he promoted youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness .
Though he was not officially married, the kingdom confirmed the continuity of the crown, announcing that the late monarch left behind a son who will succeed him . The identity of the heir will be revealed in accordance with Tooro traditions and customs .
Tributes have poured in from across Uganda, with the Buganda Kingdom, the country’s largest traditional institution, mourning the young king .
