United States has delivered military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force in Lagos and Kainji, Niger State, to support counterterrorism operations.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), in a statement on its website on Thursday, disclosed that the equipment was delivered in September through a US Air Force C-17 aircraft, as part of a foreign military sales agreement between both countries.
According to AFRICOM, the delivery strengthens the strategic partnership between the United States and Nigeria, aimed at enhancing Nigerian-led efforts to counter terrorism in the region. The command stressed that US military support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains by invitation and rooted in respect for Nigerian sovereignty.
The development comes weeks after AFRICOM Commander, Gen. Dagvin Anderson, announced a reduction in US troop deployment to Nigeria, following a May operation that killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, identified by American officials as the second-in-command of ISIS in the Lake Chad Basin.
American and Nigerian officials had earlier described the relatively small US deployment as having produced significant results in the fight against terrorism. However, small teams of US trainers and intelligence analysts are expected to remain in the country after the larger contingent is withdrawn by late September.
American officials reportedly described the Nigerian deployment as a potential model for future US counterterrorism operations elsewhere in Africa.
