…Seeks Royal Support for Issue-Based Campaigns, Peaceful Elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has appealed to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, to use his exalted platform to counsel political parties, candidates, and their supporters on the imperative of non-violent, issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the appeal was made when the INEC chairman led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Emir’s palace in Zaria, Kaduna State.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Amupitan said traditional institutions occupy a unique and respected position in Nigerian society and are well-placed to moderate political conduct, particularly at the grassroots level where most electoral violence occurs.
He stressed that INEC is committed to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in 2027, but noted that the success of the electoral process depends heavily on the cooperation of political actors and the peaceful disposition of the electorate.
The INEC chairman also reiterated the commission’s determination to ensure that no election result is predetermined, adding that INEC would continue to engage with stakeholders to build confidence in the electoral process.
Responding, the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, assured the INEC delegation of the traditional institution’s support for peaceful and credible elections. He promised to use the Emirate Council’s platforms to engage political actors on the need to shun violence and focus their campaigns on issues that affect the welfare of the people.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the visit is part of INEC’s ongoing stakeholder engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections, which are scheduled for January 16, 2027.
