N66 Petrol Discount Requires NNPC App

Motorists who want to benefit from the Federal Government’s ₦66-per-litre petrol discount must download the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) mobile application and pay digitally, as the reduction is not automatically available at filling stations.

CDA News Nigeria reports, citing Saturday PUNCH, that checks at NNPC retail outlets in Abuja on Friday found petrol still selling at ₦1,405 per litre for customers paying directly at the pump. Customers using the company’s app paid ₦1,339 per litre.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that NNPC introduced the discount on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, and that it was first meant to run until October 7. On Friday, the company extended it to October 31. In a statement by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPC said the measure applies only to its retail outlets, does not set a uniform national pump price, and is not a return of the fuel subsidy that was removed in May 2023.

The Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, earlier said the discount is funded from NNPC Retail’s own margin and not from the Federation Account.

The Punch report estimates that NNPC could forgo about ₦4.62 billion in gross revenue if all its average monthly petrol sales qualify for the discount. The figure is an estimate, and NNPC has not confirmed it.

The Petroleum Retail Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has reportedly asked for 30 per cent of the discounted supply for its members, saying the limited number of participating outlets keeps most motorists from benefiting.

The reported pump prices come from spot checks and may differ by location. At the time of filing, NNPC had not responded to the Punch findings on the app requirement.
