Residents Groan as Power Outage, Water Scarcity Hit Parts of Port Harcourt

Residents in several parts of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, are lamenting a prolonged and severe power outage that has thrown their communities into perpetual darkness, severely disrupting daily life during the festive season.

Affected residents report that the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has failed to supply power for days, with some areas receiving electricity for only three hours on a few nights. This has forced households and businesses to rely entirely on expensive fuel for generators.

The situation has exacerbated water scarcity, as many depend on electric pumps. “We are groaning in pain,” one resident told our correspondence. “People are carrying buckets and jerry cans everywhere to find water. We pay our bills but see no reason for this inhuman treatment, especially at Christmas.”

Attempts to reach PHED officials, including staff controlling a key transformer at Wimpy Junction, were unsuccessful. The blackout has cast a pall over the holiday period, with residents calling for urgent intervention from the distribution company and state authorities.
