LAGOS – The retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has remained stubbornly high, selling between N1,200 and N1,400 per kilogram in Lagos, a Vanguard News survey has revealed.
This price point defies recent assurances from marketers that the cost would return to its pre-October range of N950 to N1,000 per kg. A visit to outlets like Gasland in Igando and Mac Rich gas plant in Cele-Okota confirmed the prevailing rate of N1,200 per kg, with other locations charging up to N1,400.
Officials at various gas plants, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the significant jump from the previous month’s price of N900-N950 per kg, expressing hope for a decrease in the coming weeks.
In a phone interview, the outgoing President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Mr. Olatunbosun Oladapo, attributed the sustained high cooking gas price to a backlog of unsupplied products, refinery maintenance, and logistical challenges. He, however, expressed optimism that normalcy would return soon.
Oladapo pointed to the entry of Seplat Energy’s gas into the market and increased production from the Dangote Refinery as key factors expected to ease supply pressures and stabilize prices nationwide.
Speaking at the Association’s 38th Annual General Meeting, Oladapo also highlighted a significant rise in national LPG consumption, which has grown from 900,000 metric tonnes in 2021 to 2 million metric tonnes in 2025, crediting increased investment and policy support.
