ABUJA, NIGERIA — Panic gripped workers and residents of Nigeria’s capital city on Monday morning as fire razed part of the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja, affecting a section of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. at Section C of the building within the Federal Secretariat complex, with thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the upper floors of the multi-storey structure.
Eyewitness footage circulating on social media and captured by AIT showed dense smoke engulfing one wing of the building as staff members hurriedly evacuated the area.
Emergency responders from the Federal Fire Service were promptly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze
. The Media Department of the Office of the Head of Service confirmed the incident, stating that the fire outbreak was limited to Section C and that emergency officials were actively working to bring the situation under control.
The incident caused significant disruption in the area, with vehicular movement diverted from the Federal Court of Appeal vicinity as emergency response efforts intensified.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
