MThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has challenged President Bola Tinubu to disclose the real reason for his sudden dismissal of the nation’s service chiefs.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party acknowledged the President’s constitutional power to make the changes. However, it described the timing as “sudden,” coming amid widespread reports of an alleged coup plot.
“Our position remains therefore that the Federal Government owes Nigerians a categorical explanation about what truly happened,” the ADC stated.
The party expressed deep concern for Nigeria’s stability, citing recent military takeovers in neighbouring Chad and the Sahel region. It argued that the “near wholesale change” in military leadership only fuels “rumours and conspiracy theories.”
While insecurity remains a critical issue, the ADC alleged that the government appears “distracted” by the coup reports, suggesting this was the true catalyst for the reshuffle, not the nation’s security performance.
President Tinubu had on Friday appointed new heads for the Defence, Army, Air, and Naval Staff, replacing the previous service chiefs.
