Senegal’s Gueye Regrets AFCON Final Walk-Off, Labels It a ‘Mistake’

DAKAR – Senegal’s midfielder Pape Gueye has publicly described his team’s walk-off during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco as “a mistake.”

In an interview on French television on Sunday, Gueye reflected on the controversial moments in the match, which Senegal eventually won 1–0 after extra time in Rabat. The walk-off occurred late in the second half following a disputed refereeing decision, causing a lengthy stoppage before play resumed.

“Looking back, it was a mistake. Emotions were high, but we should have handled it differently,” Gueye stated, while also noting Morocco’s missed penalty later in the match.

Gueye, who scored the match-winning goal, expressed pride in Senegal’s victory but acknowledged that the incident marred an otherwise historic achievement.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to issue any sanctions regarding the walk-off, though disciplinary proceedings are reportedly under review.
