…..Minister Blames Governors for Party’s Woes as Rival Groups Fight for Control.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been plunged into a severe leadership crisis, with the faction loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, taking physical control of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The move intensified the power struggle within the main opposition party. Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman, declared acting chairman by the Wike-backed camp, arrived at the building accompanied by supporters, demanding the exit of the NWC led by Ambassador Umar Damagum.
The takeover follows a series of counter-suspensions between the two rival factions within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). The crisis also comes just days after a Federal High Court halted the party’s planned national convention in Ibadan.
In a television interview, Minister Wike defended his position, blaming certain PDP governors and the party’s leadership for its current ordeal. He accused them of impunity and misusing state funds to “scatter” the party.
Meanwhile, a pro-Damagum group, backed by Governor Seyi Makinde, has called on the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) to step in and take charge to resolve the escalating dispute.
