The Nigerian Senate has ordered a comprehensive investigation into railway projects executed under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. This decision follows persistent derailments and technical failures along the Itakpe-Warri standard gauge corridor, which has recorded at least 10 incidents between 2023 and 2025.
Senator Ede Dafinone (APC – Delta Central), who sponsored the motion, described the situation as “a national embarrassment” and questioned the quality of engineering and supervision. Lawmakers expressed concern over the projects despite billions of dollars borrowed for railway development.
The Senate has established an ad-hoc committee with a six-week deadline to investigate the Itakpe-Warri line and other rail projects from the Buhari era, focusing on construction quality, loan utilization, and maintenance practices.
