ABUJA – Security operatives fired tear gas at former Minister Kabiru Turaki and Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike arrived at the Peoples Democratic Party’s national secretariat on Tuesday, escalating the ongoing leadership crisis.
The incident occurred as the Turaki-led faction attempted to access the Wadata Plaza building for their scheduled meeting, while the Wike-aligned group was already conducting proceedings inside the secretariat.
Eyewitnesses reported that security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the Turaki group and their supporters as tensions reached a boiling point between the competing factions.
Governors Makinde and Mohammed, who were accompanying the Turaki faction, were caught in the security operation and affected by the tear gas along with other party members and journalists covering the event.
The dramatic confrontation unfolded just as Minister Wike’s convoy arrived at the secretariat, creating a chaotic scene that forced several people to temporarily retreat from the area.
Security personnel from the Police, DSS, and NSCDC had been deployed in large numbers around the secretariat anticipating possible clashes between the two PDP factions.
The Turaki group later announced they would reschedule their meeting while condemning what they described as “excessive use of force” against legitimate party members.
