NDLEA Arrests Ex-Lagos Councillor With 40kg Of Skunk, Uncovers 500 Pieces Of IEDs In Niger

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former two-term councillor in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, with 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, recovered from his residence.

The 45-year-old suspect, who previously represented the Orimedu community at the council and currently serves as a legislative aide, was arrested on Monday, March 2, 2026, at his home in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki.

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, a search of the premises led to the discovery of the illicit substance in one of the rooms . The suspect reportedly admitted ownership of both the drugs and the property.

In a related and equally alarming development in Niger State, NDLEA operatives on patrol along the Mokwa–Jebba road intercepted a commercial bus travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, March 4

Hidden inside a white sack were 500 pieces of components used for fabricating improvised explosive devices (IEDs), destined for delivery at Pelegi . A swift follow-up operation led to the arrest of the intended recipient, 21-year-old Osama Abdullahi, in Pelegi, located in the Mashegu Local Government Area of the state.

These seizures were part of a series of coordinated nationwide operations by the NDLEA. In the Federal Capital Territory, officers intercepted a 32-year-old businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, with 1,000 pills of tapentadol concealed inside baby diapers
. In Kogi State, a Cameroonian national, Mey Ali Muhamat, 36, was arrested with 1.55kg of Colorado, a synthetic cannabis strain.

Other significant arrests and recoveries were made in Adamawa, Kano, Ogun, Delta, and Edo states, including large quantities of tramadol, methamphetamine, codeine syrup, and skunk, as well as the destruction of cannabis farms.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers across the affected commands for their vigilance and dexterity
. He urged them to sustain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control, combining enforcement with the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaigns nationwide.
