Obi Officially Registers With ADC, Says 2027 Poll Will Be Nigerians Against Bad Leadership

AWKA, NIGERIA — Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that the 2027 general election will not merely be a contest between political parties but a defining choice between the Nigerian people and bad leadership.

Obi completed his registration on Saturday at his Agulu ward in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, during the launch of the party’s statewide membership mobilisation and revalidation exercise.

The event held at Hollywood Events Centre in Awka was witnessed by prominent political figures, including Senators Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye, who also registered, alongside five members of the National Assembly and six state assembly members.

Speaking at the event, Obi accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of overstepping its bounds by dictating to political parties how to select their candidates.

He warned that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government was perfecting plans to manipulate the electoral process.

“INEC is a referee in an election, and a referee in a match doesn’t dictate to the teams on how they should select their players. INEC should restrict itself to conducting a free, fair and transparent election. The 2027 election will be Nigerians against bad leadership,” Obi warned.

In a subsequent statement on X (formerly Twitter), Obi called on all opposition parties to forge a united front, describing the upcoming election as a defining moment for the nation
. “The forthcoming election in 2027 will not merely be a contest between political parties; it will be a defining choice between the Nigerian people and bad governance,” he said.

The former Anambra governor criticised the current administration’s economic management, alleging that it had accumulated more loans than any previous government, with repayment burdens extending from 2045 to 2050.

He emphasised that his “Operation Rescue Nigeria” project is about the collective destiny of future generations who would bear the consequences of decades of poor leadership.

Obi urged Nigerians to remain vigilant during the 2027 elections, vowing to resist any manipulation. “Unlike in the past, in 2027 our votes MUST count, and all those who are there not to count the votes will be counted among those destroying Nigeria,” he stated.

The registration exercise followed a December 31, 2025 gathering of Igbo leaders in Enugu, where stakeholders from across the South-East region identified the ADC as the most credible platform for political renewal.

Party officials confirmed that 48,900 membership cards had been distributed across Anambra’s 21 local government areas for the exercise.

ADC National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, assured that additional membership cards would be provided from the national headquarters to sustain the momentum.
