US, Israel Hit Five Oil Sites In and Near Tehran

TEHRAN, IRAN — United States and Israeli forces have hit five oil facilities in and near Tehran in a major escalation of the ongoing conflict, setting off massive fires and killing at least four people.

Saturday night’s strikes targeted four oil storage facilities and an oil transfer and production centre across Tehran and neighbouring Alborz province, marking the first time Iran’s energy infrastructure has been deliberately attacked since the war began nine days ago.

The facilities hit include the Aghdasieh oil warehouse in northeast Tehran, the Tehran refinery in the south, the Shahran oil depot in the west, and an oil depot in the city of Karaj
. Witnesses reported oil from the Shahran depot leaking into nearby streets, while a thick black haze engulfed the capital Sunday as the smell of burning oil lingered in the air.

Iran’s national oil distribution company confirmed that four tanker drivers were killed in the strikes
. The Iranian Red Crescent Society warned that toxic compounds from the burning depots could cause dangerous acid rain if precipitation occurs.

Israel confirmed it had struck “a number of fuel storage facilities in Tehran” that were used “to operate military infrastructure”
. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to press on with the assault, stating, “We have an organised plan with many surprises to destabilise the regime”.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) retaliated by striking a refinery in Israel’s Haifa with Kheibarshekan missiles
. Iranian forces also launched drone and missile attacks across the Gulf, damaging a desalination plant in Bahrain and sparking a fire at Kuwait’s international airport.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the strikes as “war crimes and crimes against humanity,” warning that targeting fuel storage facilities amounts to “intentional chemical warfare against Iranian citizens”.

The conflict has now killed more than 1,300 people in Iran and about 300 in Lebanon, according to officials.
