Fellow Priest Accuses Governor Alia of “Betrayal” for Denying Benue Genocide

BENUE – Governor Hyacinth Alia, a Catholic priest, is facing severe criticism from a fellow clergyman for his public declaration that there is “no religious genocide” in Benue State.

The rebuke came from Rev. Fr. Prince Chidi Philip, who published a scathing open letter condemning the Governor’s statement. In the letter, Fr. Philip describes Governor Alia as a “total disgrace to the Catholic priesthood” and accuses him of choosing political survival over truth.

“A man ordained to speak truth now speaks like a man terrified of losing his political seat,” Fr. Philip wrote, referencing widespread violence in Benue that has included burnt churches, murdered farmers, and seized villages.

The critic framed the Governor’s denial as a profound moral failure, stating that the Governor is “defending the narrative that benefits politicians” instead of defending his persecuted flock. He concluded by urging Governor Alia to “speak the truth for once” and prioritize the lives of his people over a potential second term in office.
