IGP Egbetokun: Nigerian Police “Worst Hit” by Fake News

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has declared that the Nigeria Police Force is the public institution most severely impacted by misinformation campaigns in the country.

Addressing officers at the 2025 Police Public Relations Officers’ Conference in Abuja, the IGP expressed serious concern over the rising trend of recycled videos, edited images, and misleading online narratives designed to damage the Force’s reputation.

“There is a growing trend of misinformation across digital platforms… No public institution in Nigeria has suffered more reputational damage from misinformation than the Nigeria Police Force,” Egbetokun stated.

He urged Police PROs across all commands to abandon silence and respond swiftly with factual, evidence-based rebuttals to false claims. Emphasizing that communication is now a critical pillar of modern policing, he warned that delayed or fragmented responses weaken institutional authority.

The IGP also highlighted ongoing reforms within the Force focused on accountability and community partnership, tasking the PROs with effectively communicating these positive changes to rebuild public trust.
