North-East CAN Faction Throws Weight Behind Rev. Hayab in Leadership Dispute

A significant faction of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared its full support for Rev. Dr. Joseph Hayab, affirming him as the constitutionally elected Chairman of the 19 Northern States and the FCT chapter.

The endorsement comes from Bishop Mohammed Naga, the Chairman of CAN in the North-East region, who also serves as the Secretary-General for the northern chapter under Rev. Hayab.

In a statement issued in Maiduguri, Bishop Naga strongly cautioned a rival group, led by Rev. Yakubu Pam and Elder Sunday Oibe, to cease presenting themselves as leaders. He stated that their tenures had “expired” following a properly conducted election in February 2025 that brought Rev. Hayab to power.

“We in the North East don’t recognize Oibe as our leader,” Bishop Naga declared. “They should desist from parading themselves. Whether there was a Court Rule or No Court Rule, there is no constitutional backing for them to claim they are our leaders.”

The bishop emphasized that the chairmen from the North-East, North-West, and North-Central zones are unified and solidly behind Rev. Hayab’s leadership. He called on members across northern Nigeria to remain calm and disregard what he described as “media distortions” from the other camp.
