Fresh Crisis Looms in Rivers as Wike-Backed Lawmakers Defect, Clash with Fubara

Rivers State is again on edge as a renewed political face-off emerges between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and lawmakers loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The conflict resurfaced when Speaker Martins Amaewhule and 15 other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 5, 2025. This move signals a breakdown of the peace brokered by President Bola Tinubu in July.

Amaewhule had earlier criticized Fubara’s administration for neglecting public schools, describing the condition of education in the state as “unacceptable and embarrassing.” The Assembly has also questioned the governor’s delay in submitting a list of commissioner-nominees for screening, further straining relations.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Chairman in Rivers, Leader Sampson, warned that the state “does not need another wave of crisis,” accusing political actors of prioritizing selfish interests over public welfare.

This development occurs just three months after the suspension of a six-month state of emergency imposed by President Tinubu to quell earlier violence between the factions.
