Rwanda Accuses DR Congo, Burundi of Ceasefire Violations Days After US-Brokered Peace Deal

Rwanda has accused the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi of violating a ceasefire in eastern DRC, just days after the signing of a US-brokered peace agreement in Washington.

The accusations came as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels captured the strategic city of Uvira, near the Burundian border, on Tuesday night. The fall of Uvira triggered a mass exodus of civilians and Congolese soldiers into Burundi, which has deployed troops to support the DRC government.

In a statement on Wednesday, Rwanda’s foreign ministry claimed that Congolese and Burundian forces had “systematically” bombed civilian villages near the Rwandan border using fighter jets and drones, actions it said the M23 was forced to counter.

“These deliberate violations of recently negotiated agreements constitute serious obstacles to peace,” the ministry stated.

The renewed fighting undermines the December 4 peace deal mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump, which was intended to end years of conflict in the mineral-rich region.

The United States and several European nations have since called on the M23 and Rwanda to immediately halt their offensive.
