Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has passed away. He died on Thursday after collapsing in his office in Yenagoa.
The deputy governor reportedly slumped around 1:30 p.m. while descending a staircase after a meeting. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, but efforts to revive him in the Intensive Care Unit were unsuccessful. He was 60 years old.
His media aide, Doubara Atasi, confirmed the incident. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a statement, mourned his death, describing him as a “Hero of Political Integrity.”
Senator Ewhrudjakpo had served as deputy governor since 2020 and was a former Senator representing Bayelsa West. He recently made headlines for refusing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with Governor Duoye Diri, remaining a key PDP figure in the state.
