Obi Slams Government Over Tax Law Discrepancies, Laments Move from ‘Padded Budgets’ to ‘Forged Laws’

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has issued a strong condemnation of the Federal Government over reported discrepancies between recently passed tax reform legislation and the versions officially gazetted and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement titled “Migrating from Padded Budgets to Forged Laws,” posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Obi described the situation as a national shame and a serious breach of constitutional governance.

“We have transitioned from a Nigeria where budgets are padded to one where laws are forged — changes that impact taxpayers’ rights and, most importantly, access to justice,” Obi stated.

He highlighted alarming alterations allegedly introduced into the gazetted laws, including a mandatory 20% deposit before tax appeals can be heard in court, provisions for asset sales without judicial oversight, and the granting of arrest powers to tax authorities—measures he claimed were not approved by the legislature.

Obi questioned the silence from the Presidency on what he termed “allegations of forgery, institutional sabotage, and abuse of process.”

The former Anambra State governor called for full transparency, demanding that the public be shown “what was signed, what was passed, and what was formally recorded.” He warned that no nation can thrive “where laws are forged and silence replaces leadership.”
