The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to call the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order over plans to resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026.
In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the NBA described the police announcement as an “affront to the authority of the court” and a display of “troubling disregard for the rule of law.”
The legal body highlighted that the legality of the policy is currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja, with judgment reserved. The NBA argued that the police have a constitutional duty to respect the judicial process and not pre-empt the court’s decision.
The NBA warned that it would initiate contempt proceedings against the IGP and the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, if the enforcement proceeds. It also directed its branches nationwide to provide legal aid to any citizen harassed or arrested under the policy.
The association reiterated that the policy, which it deems unconstitutional and extortionate, imposes an undue financial burden on Nigerians.
