NDLEA Chief Backs School Drug Test Policy, Says It Will Curb Substance Abuse

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), has stated that the newly introduced drug test policy for schools will serve as a strong deterrent against substance abuse among young Nigerians.

Marwa made the assertion on Saturday when he received the Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University, Prof. Sunday Bako, and his management team, who sought collaboration with the anti-drug agency.

He explained that the policy, developed jointly by the NDLEA and the Federal Ministry of Education, mandates compulsory and random drug integrity tests for students in tertiary institutions.

“This is not in any way punitive, but a strategic push that will largely discourage our youths from going into substance abuse because they know at every stage of their education that they will face compulsory drug test,” Marwa said.

He commended Taraba State University for establishing a Directorate of Narcotics and Drug Abuse Prohibition and pledged the NDLEA’s support through capacity-building training.

In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Bako praised the NDLEA for its professionalism and efforts in combating substance abuse, emphasizing the need for a multi-sectoral approach to drug control.
