Abia Central Senator Austin Akobundu Quits PDP Over Lingering Crisis

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Senator Austin Akobundu, has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect .

In a resignation letter dated March 10, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Oloko, Ikwuano Local Government Area, Senator Akobundu expressed gratitude for the opportunities given to him to serve in strategic capacities both within the party and the nation, describing the relationship as mutually beneficial .

However, he stated that the decision to leave became necessary after wide consultations with his associates and supporters, citing the prolonged and seemingly intractable crises that have engulfed the party for so long .

“At this time of our nation’s political evolution, the sad and seemingly intractable crises that have engulfed the Party for so long, and after wide consultations with my associates and supporters, it has become pertinent that I take the very painful but necessary decision to resign my membership of the party from today, 10th March, 2026,” the letter read .

Senator Akobundu concluded by wishing the party well in its future service to the nation.

The resignation is a significant blow to the PDP in the South East, as Akobundu is a seasoned politician and a former National Organising Secretary of the party . He also previously served as Minister of State for Defence .

The lawmaker’s exit follows a series of defections from the party, including that of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and Rivers State Senator Ipalibo Banigo.

The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions and legal battles over its leadership, culminating in Monday’s Court of Appeal judgment which nullified the party’s Ibadan convention .
