Abia PHC Performs Rare Emergency C-Section, Delivers Twins

UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE – A Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Abia State has successfully performed a rare emergency caesarean section, delivering a set of healthy twins in a procedure that highlights the state’s improving primary healthcare capacity.

The operation, carried out at a PHC in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, was led by a team of skilled health workers who acted swiftly when a pregnant woman presented with complications that required immediate surgical intervention. Both mother and babies are reported to be in stable condition.

Health officials described the feat as a significant milestone for primary healthcare in the state, where such procedures are typically referred to secondary or tertiary facilities.

“This is proof that our investment in training, equipment, and manpower at the primary level is yielding results. We are determined to bring quality healthcare closer to the people,” a state health official said.

The Abia State Government has been working to upgrade PHCs across the state, equipping them to handle a wider range of medical emergencies, including maternal health interventions.

The successful delivery has been hailed by community members and health advocates as a model for what can be achieved with adequate resources and skilled personnel at the grassroots level.
