When Governor Siminalayi Fubara assumed office in May 2023, few anticipated that his tenure would become one of the most turbulent in Rivers State’s political history. Today, a series of bold but costly political miscalculations has dramatically altered the balance of power in one of Nigeria’s most strategically important states.
Fubara’s decision to openly confront his political godfather, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, set off a chain of events that exposed the governor’s vulnerabilities — stripping him of critical legislative support, weakening his hold on key political structures, and drawing him into an exhausting battle on multiple fronts simultaneously.
Political analysts argue that Fubara underestimated the depth of Wike’s network within the Rivers State House of Assembly, the judiciary, and key federal institutions. The result was a near-successful impeachment attempt that shook his administration to its foundations and forced a controversial peace agreement widely seen as a political surrender.
Rather than consolidating that truce, Fubara allegedly breached its terms — a move Wike has publicly seized upon to further embarrass the governor and erode his remaining political capital.
The fallout has reshuffled political loyalties across the state, with lawmakers, local government officials, and party stakeholders recalibrating their allegiances in anticipation of 2027.
Observers warn that unless Fubara rebuilds bridges, restrategises, and consolidates grassroots support, his administration risks becoming a lame duck long before the next election cycle.
Rivers State politics, once predictable under Wike’s iron grip, has entered a new era of uncertainty — and Fubara’s miscalculations sit at the centre of it all.
