The Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development has called for a major restructuring of the Ministry of Defence’s leadership framework, stating it is crucial to effectively combat Nigeria’s escalating security threats.
The group’s Executive Director, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, in a statement on Thursday, argued that the current scale of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping has outgrown the existing defence arrangement, necessitating a more efficient and decisive system.
“There should be no sentiment and partisan politics in overhauling the security architecture in this period of a state of emergency on security,” Shinkafi stated.
While acknowledging recent government steps like new service chief appointments, Shinkafi highlighted persistent structural issues. He specifically pointed to the need to reassess the division of responsibilities between the Minister and the Minister of State to eliminate overlaps and strengthen coordination.
Shinkafi emphasized that the ministry’s critical duties require a unified and precise leadership setup, advocating that a Defence Minister should have a military service background to effectively coordinate the armed forces.
He welcomed the appointment of General Christopher Musa as Minister of Defence, describing it as a step aligning with national security priorities.
