Church Warns School Closures Over Insecurity are a “Setback for National Development”

The Christian Reformed Church-Nigeria, CRC-N, has declared that the continued closure of schools due to terrorist and bandit attacks is a “tragic setback to national progress.”

The warning was issued in a communiqué following the church’s 161st Synod, signed by its President, Rev. Dr. Isaiah Jirapye Magaji, and General Secretary, Rev. Joseph Agbu Ahmadu Garba.

The church lamented that educational institutions have become soft targets for criminals, forcing many boarding schools to shut down. It called on the Federal Government to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate a genuine commitment to security through “decisive and tangible actions.”

While acknowledging efforts by the Tinubu administration that have reduced the frequency of attacks, the CRC-N expressed deep concern over recent incidents and the tendency of some officials to “play politics” with the security situation.

The church also condemned statements by public figures perceived as sympathetic to bandits and commended ongoing collaboration between the Nigerian and American governments to combat terrorism.
