The political future of Rivers State has taken a defining turn as Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, member of the House of Representatives and close ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, was officially declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The declaration was made on Thursday evening at the APC State Secretariat in Port Harcourt, following the collation of results from wards across all 23 local government areas of the state. Chairman of the Primary Election Committee and Returning Officer, Bitrus Kwamoti, announced that Chinda emerged victorious with a total of 268,497 votes.
Chinda ran as the sole aspirant after Governor Siminalayi Fubara, businessman Tonye Cole, and former Commissioner Dax George-Kelly all withdrew from the contest on Wednesday, with Fubara stating he stepped down out of conviction and sacrifice for peace and unity in Rivers State.
Wike, who visited Port Harcourt in the days leading up to the primaries, had visibly signalled his firm support for Chinda — a kinsman and political associate — as the preferred APC candidate for the Brick House.
Speaking after the exercise, Chinda commended all aspirants who stepped down, describing their decision as a demonstration of unity and commitment to the party’s success. He promised to lead with the fear of God, uphold the rule of law, and ensure accountability in governance if elected Rivers State Governor in 2027.
The collation exercise was monitored by officials of INEC, security agencies, election observers, members of the media, and senior party officials to ensure transparency and adherence to due process.
Political analysts say Chinda’s emergence marks a dramatic consolidation of Wike’s grip over Rivers State’s 2027 political landscape.
