The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has directed military commanders to strengthen security along vulnerable humanitarian supply routes in Borno State following continued threats from terrorist groups.
According to CDA News Nigeria, the directive was issued during a meeting with the Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) in Nigeria, Danielle Parry, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, the army chief ordered enhanced force protection measures, improved convoy escort arrangements and closer coordination between the military and humanitarian organisations to ensure the safe movement of aid workers and relief materials.
Shaibu also instructed the Theatre Commander to reinforce security along the Dikwa–Gamboru Ngala corridor, describing the route as one of the areas where remnants of terrorist groups continue to pose threats to humanitarian operations.
The COAS reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting humanitarian activities, particularly as the resettlement of displaced persons and the decongestion of internally displaced persons (IDP) camps continue across Borno State.
During the meeting, UN OCHA’s Danielle Parry commended the Nigerian Army for its support to humanitarian operations in the North-East. She, however, noted that insecurity in Gwoza, Bama, Damboa, Dikwa and Monguno continues to hinder aid delivery and appealed for sustained military support, including intensified patrols and the clearance of improvised explosive devices.
