Couple Killed as Gunmen Attack Church in Niger’s Dosso Region

A couple was killed in southwestern Niger this week after armed individuals attacked a church during mass in Mailo village, Dosso region.

According to local sources who spoke to AFP, the assailants entered the church around 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday and fired shots into the air, causing panic among worshippers.

The couple fled and hid in their home but were pursued and killed by the attackers, who also stole cattle before escaping.

Niger has been plagued by a decade-long conflict involving jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, particularly in the Tillaberi region where previous church attacks and mass killings have occurred.

The non-governmental organization ACLED reports nearly 2,000 conflict-related deaths in Niger this year alone.

While Christian-Muslim relations in Niger are generally peaceful, suspected jihadists have been blamed for escalating violence targeting places of worship and civilians.
