Court Orders Gov. Alia to Disclose Benue’s Financial Records Since June 2023

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has ordered Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to disclose the state’s financial records dating back to June 2023.

CDA News Nigeria reports that Justice Hamza Mu’azu, sitting at the FCT High Court in Maitama, Abuja, issued the order. It followed a lawsuit by Joseph Waya, a former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Waya went to court after accusing the Alia administration of failing to provide comprehensive financial information he requested under the Freedom of Information Act on September 8, 2025. The court upheld his right to the records and ordered the state government to comply.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the order covers federal allocations, internally generated revenue, loans, grants, government contracts and other sources of public funding. It also covers foreign donations, personnel costs and pension payments.

The ruling comes amid controversy over claims by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, that Benue receives about ₦30 billion monthly from the Federation Account Allocation Committee. The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged the governor to explain how the funds were spent or publicly dispute those figures.

The PDP also alleged that combined allocations to the state and its 23 local government areas have exceeded ₦1.3 trillion since Alia took office in May 2023. It demanded detailed accounts of spending on security, healthcare, education, agriculture and infrastructure.

The order arose from an FOI suit and does not amount to a finding of financial misconduct. The Benue State Government had not publicly responded at press time.
