Court Orders Immediate Removal of Nnamdi Kanu From Kuje Prison

ABUJA – The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a significant order for the removal of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the directive, mandating that Kanu must not be held at the facility under any circumstances. The ruling cited heightened security assessments, the “notorious weaknesses” of Kuje prison, and the high-risk profile of the detainee as primary reasons.

Justice Omotosho specifically referenced the devastating 2022 attack on the facility by insurgents as a core reason it is unsuitable. The court ordered that Kanu be held in a more secure, undisclosed federal custodial center to ensure both the integrity of the judicial process and the defendant’s safety.

In reaction, Kanu’s lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, acknowledged long-standing safety concerns about Kuje but expressed apprehension over the secrecy of the new location, emphasizing the need to protect Kanu’s constitutional rights to legal access and family contact.
