Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has asked to be left out of speculations suggesting he may replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Dogara responded to ongoing debate about a possible Muslim–Muslim ticket repetition, stressing the importance of inclusive and religiously balanced governance.
“Whatever we are doing shouldn’t be because we are afraid of anybody breathing down our necks; it should be because it is the right thing to do,” Dogara stated, advocating for a rotational presidency and faith-based representation in leadership.
He confirmed that discussions around a Christian running mate for 2027 are already taking place within political circles, but ultimately noted that the president’s decision would be pivotal given his control over the party’s nomination.
