Akwa Ibom CJ Frees 63 Inmates

UYO, NIGERIA – The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, has released 63 inmates from various correctional facilities across the state as part of ongoing efforts to decongest prisons and ensure justice reform.

The exercise, carried out during a routine jail delivery visit, saw the release of inmates who had spent extended periods in custody without trial or were awaiting trial for minor offenses. Many of those freed had been held beyond the constitutionally stipulated period without their cases being heard.

Justice Obot urged the released inmates to be law-abiding and reintegrate into society as responsible citizens. She also called on the state government to expedite legal processes and improve access to justice for indigent defendants.

“Justice delayed is justice denied. We must ensure that the rights of all individuals, including those awaiting trial, are protected,” the Chief Judge stated.

The Akwa Ibom State Judiciary has been proactive in decongesting correctional facilities through periodic jail delivery exercises. This latest release brings the total number of inmates freed in the state in recent months to over 200.

Authorities have commended the Chief Judge’s commitment to judicial reform, while civil society groups have called for sustained efforts to address systemic delays in the justice system.
