TEHRAN, IRAN – Iran has launched a fresh missile barrage targeting what it described as “strategic military sites,” even as former US President Donald Trump signaled progress in ongoing nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Western powers.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the missile tests, describing them as a show of defensive strength amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region. The launch comes just days after Trump announced that peace talks were yielding “very good” results, prompting a temporary postponement of planned strikes on Iranian power plants.
State media in Iran hailed the missile tests as a demonstration of the country’s military readiness, while Trump, in a social media post, called the move “provocative” but maintained that diplomatic channels remain open.
“The progress we’ve made is too important to abandon. But Iran must understand that provocations will not be tolerated,” Trump wrote.
European mediators expressed concern over the mixed signals, urging both sides to recommit to de-escalation. The back-and-forth has rattled global oil markets, with crude prices fluctuating as traders weigh the prospects of peace against the risk of open conflict.
Analysts warn that the conflicting actions—missile tests on one hand and diplomatic engagement on the other—reflect deepening divisions within Iran’s leadership over how to engage with the West.
