Ex-Presidential Candidate Hails UN Intervention Over Violence Against Christian Women and Girls in Nigeria

Former presidential candidate, clergywoman, peace advocate and public affairs commentator, Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, has welcomed the recent intervention of the United Nations over reports of violence, insecurity and human rights violations affecting Christian women and girls in Nigeria.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on June 13, 2026, Adesanya-Davies described the action by UN experts as an important international acknowledgment of a humanitarian and security challenge requiring urgent attention and responsible action.

According to reports issued through the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UN experts expressed concerns over allegations of abductions, sexual violence, forced marriages, forced conversions, killings and other forms of exploitation involving Christian women and girls, particularly in parts of Northern Nigeria.

“I welcome this timely intervention by the United Nations. It is encouraging that the cries of vulnerable women and girls, families and affected communities are receiving global attention,” she said.

The former presidential candidate stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of religion, ethnicity or social background, deserves dignity, protection and justice under the law.

She urged Nigerian authorities to engage constructively with international human rights mechanisms while strengthening local responses to ensure accountability, protection for survivors and long-term peacebuilding.

Adesanya-Davies further called for collaboration among government institutions, security agencies, civil society organisations, faith leaders and international partners to address insecurity and support vulnerable communities through humanitarian assistance, education, trauma recovery and economic empowerment.

She concluded by expressing hope that sustained advocacy and responsible leadership would contribute to stronger protection systems and a safer future for all Nigerians.
