Nigeria’s Falconets will face England on Thursday in the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, with both teams battling for a place in the quarter-finals.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Falconets remain Africa’s only representative left in the competition after Tanzania, Ghana and Benin Republic were eliminated from the tournament.
Moses Aduku’s side qualified for the last 16 after thrashing New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F fixture over the weekend, finishing second in their group with four points from three matches, having lost to Spain, drawn with China and defeated New Caledonia.
England, who finished second in Group B behind Brazil but level with Canada on points, goal difference and goals scored, will host the encounter at Bielsko-Biała. The last meeting between both sides came in the 2014 edition in Canada, where Nigeria won 2-1 thanks to goals from Loveth Ayila and Asisat Oshoala.
Lagos-based journalist Femi Fabunmi told CDA News Nigeria’s sister publication that the Falconets have improved significantly since their group-stage loss to Spain, but stressed the need to tighten their goalkeeping and defence to overcome England and reach the quarter-finals.
CDA News Nigeria will continue providing updates as the Falconets’ campaign continues.
