Family Alerts: DSS Obstruction May Prevent Nnamdi Kanu’s Court Appearance

The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has raised an alarm, warning that he may be unable to appear in court for his scheduled trial due to alleged obstruction by the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a strong statement released on Thursday, the family accused the secret police of deliberately sabotaging Kanu’s ability to prepare his defence. They claimed the DSS has made it “almost impossible” for him to have proper access to his legal team, family members, and key witnesses.

Specific allegations include the DSS preventing visitors, recording private attorney-client meetings, and refusing Kanu access to a computer and printer to prepare necessary court documents. The family stated that these actions violate the Nigerian Constitution and his fundamental right to a fair hearing.

“If Mazi Nnamdi Kanu cannot appear in court or defend himself, the DSS and the Nigerian Government should be held responsible,” the statement read, preemptively countering any potential narrative that Kanu himself is refusing to attend the court proceeding.

The family has called on international bodies like the United Nations, the African Union, and human rights organizations to closely monitor the situation, asserting that the Nigerian government cannot claim to uphold the rule of law while “silencing a defendant.”
