Fani-Kayode Slams Peter Obi, Says He Served Abacha While NADECO Fought for Democracy

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has criticized former Peter Obi, alleging that Obi held a position under the military regime of Sani Abacha while members of the NADECO fought for the country’s return to democracy.

In a statement released on Thursday, Fani-Kayode contrasted Obi’s tenure with the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, suggesting that Obi’s record does not align with the struggles that helped restore democratic governance in Nigeria.

“While NADECO patriots risked their lives to fight for democracy during the Abacha era, Peter Obi served in the structures of that oppressive government. History will judge those who were complicit versus those who resisted,” Fani-Kayode said.

The remarks have reignited debates over the roles of political figures during Nigeria’s military rule, with supporters of Obi defending his professional service record and arguing that it does not diminish his contributions to public administration.

Political analysts note that such statements are part of the broader pre-election political discourse, where historical narratives are often invoked to influence public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers expect the controversy to fuel further discussions on the political legacies of prominent Nigerian leaders and their positions during key historical periods.
