FCT Elections to Begin 8:30am as Stipulated – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that voting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections will commence at 8:30 a.m. as stipulated by law, dismissing any speculation of delays.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the FCT Election Committee, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, gave the assurance during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, a day ahead of the crucial polls.

“Let me assure all voters that elections will begin at 8:30 a.m. as stipulated by the Electoral Act. Our officials are already deployed, and materials have been distributed to all polling units across the six area councils,” Gumus stated.

Voter Accreditation

The commissioner disclosed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) would be used for both accreditation and voting, emphasizing that only voters with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would be allowed to participate.

“Accreditation will be simultaneous with voting. We have deployed sufficient BVAS machines across the 2,822 polling units, and our technical teams are on ground to address any glitches promptly,” she added.

Security Arrangements

Gumus assured residents that adequate security measures were in place to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections, urging voters to come out en masse without fear of intimidation.

INEC reported that 1,587,025 PVCs have been collected across the FCT, representing a 94.4 per cent collection rate, indicating strong voter readiness for the exercise.
