ABUJA – In a decisive move to address a worsening security crisis, the House of Representatives has called for the establishment of a new military base in Plateau State.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, who represents the Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam constituency.
Gagdi raised the alarm over persistent violence, describing his constituency as being “under siege” since 2022.
“Armed bandits have turned our once peaceful communities into killing fields. People can no longer go to their farms,” he stated.
The lawmaker detailed recent tragedies, including the abduction of two village heads. One was killed in captivity, while the other remains missing.
A Multi-Pronged Security Response
Beyond the new military base in Plateau, the House’s plan includes:
· A new police divisional headquarters for the Gum area.
· A divisional office for the NSCDC in Gwamlar.
· Expanded DSS special operations in Kanam.
The House also mandated immediate humanitarian aid for victims of both banditry and recent flooding disasters.
Security committees have been tasked to ensure compliance and report back within eight weeks.
