NSCEA Calls For Immediate Disbandment Of Supreme Council For Sharia In Nigeria

ABUJA – The Nigerian Supreme Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs (NSCEA) has demanded the immediate disbandment of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN), citing constitutional violations, security concerns, and threats to national unity.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Tuesday and signed by Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, Secretary of the NSCEA Elders’ Council, the Christian body outlined five key reasons for its demand, including redundancy with the existing Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and challenges to Nigeria’s secular status.

“The so-called Supreme Council for Sharia represents not just a duplication of existing Islamic structures, but a threat to our constitutional order, our national unity, and our secular identity,” the NSCEA stated in its press release.

The council argued that the SCSN’s existence undermines Nigeria’s secular character as established in the constitution, creates unnecessary religious polarization, and poses security risks by potentially legitimizing parallel religious-legal structures that could be exploited by extremist elements.

The NSCEA also raised concerns about the SCSN’s lack of transparent accountability mechanisms and questioned its funding sources, noting that public affairs commentator Dr. Majeed Dahiru had previously questioned the constitutional basis for the council’s operations.

The Christian body has called for immediate government investigation into the SCSN’s legal status, legislative review of its constitutional basis, national interfaith dialogue, and enhanced civil society monitoring of religious organizations.
