House of Representatives Amends Electoral Act, Empowers INEC, Defers Contentious Clauses

ABUJA — The House of Representatives on Wednesday advanced significant amendments to the Electoral Act, approving clauses that strengthen the powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), tighten electoral procedures, and address gaps observed in recent elections.

During a clause-by-clause consideration at plenary, lawmakers adopted provisions aimed at enhancing transparency, reducing disputes, and curbing malpractice.

Key Amendments Approved:

· INEC Authority: Clauses 10 and 12 were approved to reinforce INEC’s control over election organization, supervision, logistics, and personnel deployment.
· Voter Registration: Clauses 18 and 22 were amended to curb manipulation and ensure broader inclusion in the voter register.
· Candidate Nomination: Clauses 23 and 29 clarify timelines and strengthen INEC’s oversight of political party primaries and candidate submissions.
· Voting & Technology: Clauses 47, 50, and 54 reaffirm legal backing for electronic systems in voter accreditation and result transmission.
· Electoral Offences: Clauses 64 and 65 impose tougher penalties for offences like vote-buying.

Contentious Clause Deferred:
While numerous clauses were approved, some contentious provisions were deferred for further deliberation, indicating ongoing negotiations among lawmakers.

The move is part of broader legislative efforts to improve Nigeria’s electoral integrity ahead of future polls, including the 2027 general elections.
