Federal High Court Dismisses Assassination Report as “Fake News”

The Federal High Court of Nigeria has officially dismissed a viral report claiming that Justice James Omotosho survived an assassination attempt, labeling the story as “completely false and unfounded” .

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, the Chief Registrar of the Court, Sulaiman Hassan, firmly rebutted the publication by a “Celebrity Blogger” which alleged that the judge was attacked and hospitalized just days after handing down a life sentence to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) . The false report had claimed the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, sending security forces into a scramble .

“The public is advised to treat this publication as fake news and refrain from further dissemination to prevent the spread of misinformation,” the court’s statement read . Given the gravity of the report and its potential to cause panic and undermine the judicial system, the court has called on security agencies to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the false report under cybercrime and misinformation laws .

The court’s clarification aims to maintain public confidence in the judiciary amid the heightened attention surrounding the recent high-profile sentencing .
