Former NFA Chairman Ibrahim Galadima Dies at 74 After Prolonged Illness

Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), has passed away at the age of 74 after a protracted illness. He died on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in Kano.

His death was confirmed by former NFA General Secretary, Sani Ahmed Toro, who wrote: “I regret to announce the death of our respected Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, former NFA Chairman, today in Kano. May Allah reward him with Aljanna Firdausi”.

Galadima served as President of the then NFA from 2002 to 2006, a period marked by administrative reforms and Nigeria’s continued presence on the continental and global football stage. He was replaced by Sani Lulu after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

Beyond his national role, Galadima was the founder of Kano Pillars Football Club, merging WRECA FC, Kano Golden Stars, and Bank of the North FC in 1990 to create one of Nigeria’s most successful clubs. He also served as Chairman of the Kano State Football Association (1977–1979), Executive Chairman of the Kano State Sports Council (1981–1983), and First Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (1985–1987). He was also a Commissioner in Kano State.

In an official statement, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau mourned Galadima as a “mentor” and “father figure.” “He was the epitome of high dignity, diligence, and integrity. We will miss his fatherly advice and words of wisdom dearly,” Gusau said.

His janazah prayer will be held on Sunday at 10 am at Masallacin Waje, Fagge LGA of Kano.
