NBC Warns TV Anchors Against Bullying Guests, Compromising Neutrality Ahead of 2027 Polls

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a strong warning to television anchors and presenters against bullying guests, expressing personal opinions as fact, and compromising neutrality on air.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 17, 2026, the NBC said it had observed a “disturbing decline in professionalism” across news, current affairs, and political programmes, with some anchors breaching standards of fairness, balance, and impartiality.

The commission specifically warned that any anchor or presenter found to have “expressed personal opinion as fact, bullied or intimidated a guest, denied fair hearing to opposing views, or otherwise compromised neutrality, shall be deemed to have committed a Class B breach”.

The NBC also clarified that editorial responsibility rests solely with broadcasters and cannot be transferred to guests, even during live programmes.

The warning comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. The commission expressed concern over the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors to air divisive, inflammatory, or unsubstantiated content capable of inciting disorder and spreading hate speech.

The NBC vowed to enforce “strict and uncompromised compliance” with all provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, warning that violations will attract regulatory sanctions. It urged broadcasters to uphold ethical standards and ensure the airwaves remain platforms for credible information and national cohesion.
